In the transition to a new stage of learning, first-year college students need to develop study habits and skills for successful independent work. We designed StudyBuddy to support that behavioural change.
We ran interviews with peer tutors and surveys with students in Pitt's CS department, and found students had difficulty managing projects and time. We deployed StudyBuddy in Slack, where it periodically sends tips, assesses study habits via surveys, helps students break down assignments and sends reminders. We finished by offering design guidelines for chatbots supporting learning behavioural change among college computer science students.
